WebJul 21, 2008 · General rule of thumb (or pinky), with metallic noise while cranking, starter needs to be shimmed closer to the flywheel/flexplate. I assume you're shimming the starter as a whole? If that's not bringing it any closer, you'll need to shim at the outboard mounting bolt only to rotate the starter closer.
